CHAPTER 10

Madison

The anticipation and excitement for the first official day of the Christmas Getaway wakes me a full hour before my alarm. Today’s event? Building sandcastles or Christmas-themed sculptures. The forecast calls for clear skies with a high of seventy-two degrees. The perfect beach weather, if you ask me.

I like to give my guests as much freedom to create whatever they’d like because we’re all motivated and gifted in different ways. Like Mrs. Sanderson’s niece—I know she’ll spend hours building a sandcastle. She’s a professional interior decorator and loves structure.

Me? I’d probably just do a wreath or a Christmas tree.

Did I mention I’m average? Oh, I have good ideas, but nothing that blows the mind. But I’m great at organizing and implementing. Like the Christmas Getaway.

But first things first. I need to check in with Dominic to make sure we’re on track for the grazing table. I’m still nervous about how my guests will react, but I’m willing to trust Dominic and his stellar chef skills to pull this thing off.

My thoughts wander as I wonder what made him want to be a chef in the first place. And where does he cook when he’s not helping Bill? Because I’d like to eat at his restaurant.

Besides, I haven’t had a chance to thank him for that adorable cookie. I still can’t bring myself to eat it, to be honest. It’s just so dang cute!

By the time I reach the back patio over at The Turtle Tide, Avery is covering three six-foot tables lined up end to end with butcher paper, but a light breeze is making her work a challenge at the end closest to me.

I dash over and hold down the ends as she tapes them down.

“Thank you. Any more of that and the paper would have torn.” She tears off another strip of packing tape to finish securing the end. “There. Now it’s ready for the food.”

I scan the long table, trying to imagine it full of food. “Is Dominic inside?”

Avery gestures toward the door with the tape. “Yeah, he’s in the kitchen.”

Once my eyes adjust to the indoor lighting, I hang a right, push the kitchen door open, and then freeze. Dominic’s voice is loud as he gives orders to the staff, who are scurrying around like one of those fire ant mounds you want to steer clear of around here.

Maybe I’ll come back later. I turn around to leave.

“Madison.” Dominic’s voice doesn’t exactly sound like a bark, but close.

I spin around and smile. “Sorry. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

He strides over to where I’m standing, leaving only a couple of feet between us. Plus, his broad shoulders are now blocking my view of the kitchen. “Did you need something?”

“No, I just wanted to check in and make sure we’re on track.” I lean past him to study the worker ants and check my watch. One hour until I lead my guests with their bags of tools out to the beach. “We start in one hour. Will
